MSD Box and Ford Box???? Guys can I get a little feedback on what the majority of people are doing when installing an MSD ignition box such as a 6AL? MSD gives the option of using the duraspark dizzy as the magnetic trigger (and eliminating the factory ignition box I believe) or retaining the factory box to trigger the MSD box. It currently has 8mm plug wires with Motorcraft Copper plugs. The only cost-effective 8mm wires are from Accel, and Ford Racing has a set of 9mm wires for the same price. As for HEI, that is a GM term. FORD had the DURASPARK II system which when coupled to a TFI coil will outfire the HEI. Look for a DURASPARK II distributor from a mid-seventies pickup with a 360/390. I read also on an earlier post about cylinder heads in the later Slab Side LINC. ;

So I got it fired up and it would run but would act like a misfire and just ran like ass. I thought maybe the MSD 6AL that I had just got fixed from MSD had a problem. Nope, it was my dumb ass who hooked the 2 wires going to my Duraspark distributor backwards. After that, it was game on.... i bought a duraspark one a while back and want to install. i just want to make sure they are basiclly the same thing and wont give me any problems. i plan to hook it up to an msd 6a box without the ignition module. the only difference i think are the cap sizes. also what kind of wires do you guys run with the msd i think i need to go bigger then 7.5mm. any help is appreciated.

The Duraspark II system was never implemented in Jeep Ignition Systems. Neither the Duraspark I or II system uses the Ignition Module Case for ground. The circuit board is completely immersed in the plastic seal. The BLACK wire going to the distributor is its only source of Ground. The Duraspark II system did not use a 1.35 Ohm ignition resistor. Matt I'd either go with a Duraspark setup, you can snag one of of any late '70s - early '80s V8 Ford, or keep your existing distributor, and use its points to trigger an MSD box. Points wear is basicly a non-issue with the MSD box. Crane makes a similar box as well.

I've had the duraspark for several years w/o any problems. IIRC, the MSD uses the similar function of magnetic pickup inside the distributor as the duraspark although the MSD is 'prettier'. I plan to add the 6AL box to replace the duraspark original box and it should be all set, but it does work great now.
